Thoughts on the Legend of the Tárogató

After numerous years as a tárogató player I am still facinated by mystical stories and legends about the instrument. I want to share some of my thoughts with those interested in getting a clearer picture than that spread mostly by non-musicians.

The well-known and popular Schunda reform tárogató has a 120-year history. The instrument itself is thought to be over a thousand years old. Regarded by some as a magical instrument, the tárogató was less popular with Kodály and Bartók who thought it had a chocolate sound and did not consider it a classical instrument.

However, I believe that our age is the appropriate time to let this "wonderful peace of wood" reveal its true beauty and novely of sound.

László Kiss Gy.

Clarinetist László Kiss Gy. was born in 1955. After graduating from the Music Academy he became a member of the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra and Budapest Festival Orchestra. Today he spends most of his time helping people get aquainted with the tárogató. His experience in classical and contemporary music provides a rare chance to elevate this instrument into the classical. Winner of Artisjus and Liszt awards, his concerts and recordings inspire.
