R. Strauss: E flat major sonata, op. 18
Sonare means: to play an instrument. The word sonata originates from this Italian word. Beethoven's op.12. no. 1 is a conversation between two equal partners: violin and piano. The piece, dedicated to Antonio Salieri, was composed at a time (1797) when Beethoven the piano virtuoso himself frequently appeared on stage with violinists and cellists.
Fast forward more than a hundred years and we arrive at the time when Ravel's sonata was written: 1923–27. The second movement betrays the influence of jazz. The violin-piano sonata was first played in America by the composer and József Szigeti in 1928. The movements: I. Allegretto II. Blues III. Perpetuum Mobile
Richard Strauss' violin-piano sonata has been called "an orgy of musical colors." Another view has this piece stretching the boundaries of chamber music, with the Finale as a precursor of the tempestual overture of Don Juan written in the following year.
