Schubert: Death and the Maiden
Guitar and conductor: Notis Georgiou

Notis Georgiou and the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra guide the audience into the world of the Baroque, early Romanticism and contemporary Greek classical music. The concert begins with Concerto Grosso master Arcangelo Corelli’s piece. The five-movement concerto is a part of the twelve-piece collection (op. 6., 1714), which later served as an example to Handel’s chamber orchestra works. The concert continues with the Greek experimental composer Vassilis Tenedis’ piece Tarregiana, a first performance (string orchestra arrangement). Tenedis created both symphonic and chamber orchestra pieces, choral and vocal works, but is also feels at home with the world of film scores and jazz. Host and conductor Cyprus-born Notis Georgiou will play the guitar. In the second half of the concert, you may enjoy a chamber music arrangement of Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in D minor (D810), which was composed in the winter of 1825–26. It is mostly known as the Death and the Maiden after the arrangement of Schubert’s own song by this title. Schubert died very young, at the age of only thirty-one in 1828, so he did not live to see his work published, since printing only began in 1831.
